Why does a person walk on two legs?

Our ancestors began to walk on two legs long before the size of the brain increased and stone tools appeared. Walking on two legs actually requires half as much energy as walking on four legs. Probably, our ancestors obtained more food due to the fact that they did not use their hands when walking. Walking upright may even have helped them protect themselves from overheating, as smaller areas of their skin were exposed to the sun.
