Why in the 5th-10th centuries neither the Church nor the rulers of Byzantium helped Rome to maintain its leading position in barbarian Europe?
With the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476), the rulers and higher clergy of Constantinople began to consider themselves the only heirs of the Roman state and its culture.
