Why is meiosis called reduction fission?

Meiosis is a cell division in which there is a 2-fold decrease in the number of chromosomes. Reduction is a reduction, disappearance, therefore meiotic division is called reduction. As a result, four haploid cells (nc) are obtained from one diploid cell (2n2c).
