Why is mitochondrial DNA inherited only through the mother?

| In mammals, mitochondria are inherited only through the mother, since all the mitochondria of the future organism are contained in the egg, and when fertilized from the sperm, only the nucleus penetrates the cytoplasm of the egg. Therefore, by analyzing mitochondrial DNA, it is possible to trace family ties along the mother’s side.
