Why is pollution of the environment with household waste a serious environmental problem?

During the decomposition of waste as a result of the vital activity of various microorganisms, landfill gas is formed, containing about 140 toxic chemical compounds. The basis of landfill gas is methane (40-75%) and carbon dioxide (25-45%). Also when rotting
protein products, hydrogen sulfide is released (it has a characteristic smell of rotten eggs). Household waste contains many plastic products, the decomposition period of which in the natural environment is hundreds of years. At the same time, toxic substances are released that poison the soil and water.
Waste plastics, paper, glass, old household appliances, batteries must be collected separately in containers for separate waste collection.
