There is ozone in the atmosphere. It forms a special ozone layer, which traps radiation from space, which is dangerous for organisms. In addition, the atmosphere, like a blanket, protects the Earth from strong cooling at night. It protects the Earth from meteorites. Most of them, getting into it, burn out.
