Why was Charlemagne’s state less durable than the states of Clovis or Alfred?

| The empire of Charlemagne was located on a vast territory, on which several different peoples were simultaneously “born”: the French, Germans, Burgundians and Italians. As they were “born”, these peoples formed their statehood, separating from the Carolingian empire. Under Chlodwig, one people of the Franks managed to subjugate small Gaul, creating a strong state there.
