Why was Magellan’s project supported by the king of Spain and not Portugal?

At the beginning of the 16th century, Portugal was busy with the development of Africa and. owned the Eastern sea route to India, Spain did not yet have colonies in the tropics and hoped to get ahead of the Portuguese in India, getting there by the Western sea route.
