the development of the craft directly depended on the natural materials that were available in the area. Skilled artisans lived in Phoenician cities. They knew how to produce and dye fabrics. Fabrics dyed with purple were especially prized. Jewelers made exquisite jewelry from gold, silver and precious stones, which the local wealthy and foreigners willingly bought. Carvers created expressive figurines and ivory products.
Phoenician craftsmen invented transparent glass. It was smelted in special furnaces from a mixture of white sand and soda. Vessels for incense and vases were blown out of glass.
The Babylonians and Egyptians also developed monumental construction in the form of large pyramids, statues and stone carvings.
