Among the Aztecs, the merchants were not only “suppliers”, but also scouts-explorers like Russian Cossacks or Novgorod ushkuiniks. They were grouped in “guilds” and, at their own peril and risk, equipped long-distance expeditions. Merchants often turned out to be richer than the Aztec governors.
