Sometimes around the Sun or Moon, rainbow rings – halo – are visible. How are they formed?

Unlike a rainbow, a halo arises from the dispersion of light on ice crystals in high clouds. Crystals in this case have the form of hexagonal prisms or flat plates. The halo does not appear in clouds of star-shaped snowflakes.
