Most of the sulfur oxide (1V) is used for the production of sulfurous and sulfuric acid and their salts. It is also used in winemaking as a preservative (food additive E220), as well as for preserving fruits and vegetables. Sulfur (IV) oxide is used to bleach straw, silk and wool, that is, materials that cannot be bleached with chlorine.
