Tell us about the use of sulfur dioxide, as well as about the effect of sulfur dioxide, getting into the atmosphere, on the environment. Explain what acid rain is.
Most of the sulfur oxide (1V) is used for the production of sulfurous and sulfuric acid and their salts. It is also used in winemaking as a preservative (food additive E220), as well as for preserving fruits and vegetables. Since this gas kills microorganisms, vegetable stores and warehouses are fumigated with it. Sulfur (IV) oxide is used to bleach straw, silk and wool, that is, materials that cannot be bleached with chlorine.
The term “acid rain” refers to any type of meteorological precipitation: snow, smog, fog, rain, hail, acidified (pH below 5.6) due to the increased content of industrial emissions in the air, mainly SO2, NO2, HC1, etc. Acid rains have a detrimental effect on nature, human health, and also on works of art made of marble.
