What are called dark nebulae and why are they dark? Give examples.

Clouds of molecular hydrogen and cosmic dust form gas-dust complexes. They shield distant stars and are observed as dark nebulae. In the constellation Orion, the bright nebula is bordered by the dark Horsehead nebula. Also known are “North America”, “Coal bag”.
