| The red color of the surface of Mars is determined by the high content of iron in its soil (12 – 14%). The red color of the planet in ancient times was associated with the color of blood, and therefore the planet was named after the god of war Mars (Ares – among the Greeks). The color of the blood is determined by the presence of hemoglobin, which also contains iron.
