What explains the ability of liquids to maintain their volume?

The ability of liquids to maintain their volume is explained by the fact that, as in solids, molecules in liquids are located close to each other. The liquid molecules are rather densely packed, however, they not only oscillate at the same place surrounded by the nearest “neighbors”, but they can quite easily move around the volume occupied by the liquid. Therefore, liquids retain volume, but do not retain their shape – they are fluid.
