Many Neanderthals lived in caves. They built their homes, dressed in the skins of mammoths and other animals, fleeing from the cold, made choppers from flint, needles, spikes and scrapers, knew how to make fire and use it for cooking. They also possessed gesticulation and poorly separated speech.
they had a developed culture. they performed complex rites of sacrifice. drove their dead. their stone tools reached the highest perfection. they created their artificial environment and indeed they were called homo sapiens (intelligent man)
