What is the role of crossing over in the evolutionary process?

Crossover – the cross of homologous chromosomes in meiosis, leads to a variety of gametes and, as a result, genetic combinations in the offspring. This, in turn, provides an opportunity for natural selection and the emergence of a greater variety of adaptations to environmental conditions.
