| Mammals play a huge role in natural biocenoses. The great mobility of animals, their consumption of a variety of plant and animal foods make them the most important links in food chains and food networks. Predatory mammals restrain growth and stabilize the number of their prey. By attacking and eating sick, injured, weak individuals, predators heal the prey population. Many animals are involved in the spread of seeds and fruits of plants. The environment-forming role of mammals is great. So, burrowing mammals loosen and enrich the soil with oxygen and organic matter, making it more fertile. The food and construction activities of beavers change the water regime and the landscape of their habitats.
