What made the phalanx a formidable force?

When the hoplites went into battle, they lined up in a special way: several hundred people stood in a row – one next to another; other soldiers lined up behind them in the same way, in the back of each other’s heads. There were usually 6-8 such rows. The phalanx was strong until the line of warriors was broken.
