| Comet atmospheres can be larger than all known objects in the solar system, including the sun itself. So, comet Holmes in 1882 had a shell with a diameter of 1.5 million kilometers. Comet Kohouthek in 1973, when passing near the Sun, had an outer shell of hydrogen with a diameter larger than the diameter of the Sun (1.4 million km).
