| Why did Hertz use an oscillatory circuit as a receiver of electromagnetic radiation, which was designed in the same way as a vibrator? Why did he call it a resonator?
Hertz discovered that under the influence of the electric field of an electromagnetic wave, forced electromagnetic oscillations arose in the resonator. When resonance is reached, their amplitude reaches a value at which a spark may appear in the spark gap of the resonator. In order for the frequency of the receiver to coincide with the frequency of the electromagnetic wave, Hertz and used an oscillatory circuit the same as the vibrator. Because resonance occurred in the vibrator, then the receiver was called a resonator.
