| Why didn’t the liberal and social-democratic governments of the Western countries help the democratic countries of Spain and Czechoslovakia in the fight against fascism?
Because they pursued a policy of “non-interference” and “appeasement”. The leaders of the Western countries believed that it was impossible to defend with arms in hand every clause of the Treaty of Versailles. Great Britain and France were ready to give in, just not to suffer casualties associated with the war. And in 1935 the United States decided not to participate in the affairs of Europe and in the event of a war, not to support anyone.
