Why is the Earth ellipsoidal?

On the surface of an ellipsoid of revolution, a material point is in equilibrium under the action of only two forces: the force of gravity and the reaction force of the support. Due to the absence of the static friction force, the water surface can only have the shape of an ellipsoid. The ellipsoid of the Earth differs little from the sphere.
